Aomi area

This area is located at the eastern edge of Tokyo. It is adjacent to Chiba Prefecture across the Edogawa river and borders Saitama Prefecture to the north. It has particularly good accessibility to the Keiyo and Joban regions. As it also faces Tokyo Bay, businesses in this area can use the Port of Tokyo’s logistic functions to their maximum advantage.

The area has the largest population in the metropolis of Tokyo with nearly 3 million people. There are also over 130,000 business establishments located here.

It is also a popular sightseeing area, with leading tourist attractions such as the Tokyo Skytree in Sumida Ward and Ueno Park and Sensoji Temple in Taito Ward. It welcomes many visitors from overseas.

The Ariake, Aomi, and other areas along Tokyo Bay are also scheduled sites for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games venues, and developments are underway.

It holds the largest number of manufacturing business establishments in Tokyo, with a total of some 5,000. Nearly 40 percent of the manufacturing businesses in Tokyo are concentrated in the Joto area.

A characteristic is its many small-scale businesses. Notably, over 90 percent of the leather and leather product businesses, over 80 percent of rubber product businesses, and over 60 percent of the textile industry, paper and paper product, wood and wooden product businesses are found here.

Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Techonology Research Institute

A feature of the Joto area is its substantial small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) support facilities.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute, a local independent administration institution, is a testing and research facility providing technical support, including entrusted tests, R&D, consultations on technology, and human resource development, to SMEs in Tokyo. The Joto Branch and Sumida Branch provide various types of support tailored to the needs of the local manufacturers.
